Honors Thesis with Dr. Jason Young (Spring 2018)
Hunter College Psychology Department
Fear of crime (FOC), a negative emotional reaction to a perceived or actual threat that may impact behavior, cognition, and affect, has been demonstrated to interact with various socioeconomic and psychological factors. This secondary analysis of a 2015 survey conducted in Trinidad and Tobago explores overall trends and differences between two main ethnic groups and the reasons for these differences. The results (N = 538) indicate significant differences by gender in FOC, safety measures, and general fear, and by ethnicity in FOC, intolerance of uncertainty, victimization risk, general fear, and education level. Intolerance of uncertainty correlates significantly stronger with FOC and victimization risk for Afro- compared to Indo-Trinidadians. These findings may increase understanding of factors contributing to FOC in this society, informing efforts to reduce such fear. Future research should investigate interventions and the universality of these relationships.
