Publication "Local power outages, heat, and community characteristics in New York City"

Check out our peer-reviewed publication "Local power outages, heat, and community characteristics in New York City" in the December 2023 volume of Sustainable Cities and Society. This work came out of our efforts on the forthcoming fourth assessment report of the New York City Panel on Climate Change. Some key highlights and implications:

• 311 Calls for NYC power outages occur unevenly throughout the year, mostly during the hotter months, and in clustered spatial patterns in the city.
• High power outage call areas are areas of under-resourced, heat vulnerable populations.
• Publicly available power outage data at high resolution are needed to identify causality and impact. Survey work is needed to understand the lived experience of power outages.
• NYC's current electricity transition could exacerbate circumstances for some neighborhoods. Equitable investments are needed to achieve a just energy transition, ensuring that all urban residents can rely on their electrical systems to provide necessary services and move sustainably into a greener future.
