New York Must Step Up to Pass the Climate, Jobs, and Justice Package

A Letter to the Editor from Jenna Tipaldo, published 3/30/23 in the Queens Chronicle

"It's time for annual budget negotiations in Albany and communities across Queens, from Elmhurst to the Rockaways, are still dealing with the consequences of flooding from hurricanes like Sandy and Ida as sea levels continue to rise. My family was displaced from our home for seven months following Hurricane Sandy and some of my neighbors in the Rockaways are still recovering from the floods and fires of ten years ago. Three years ago New York passed a flagship Climate Act (the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, or CLCPA) but in 2023 it still isn't fully funded while our communities continue to be devastated by increasingly stronger storms like Ida and the coastal inundation that took many by surprise this past December. Incorporating the Climate, Jobs, and Justice Package (CCJP) into this year's state budget would make sure that our state can address climate-related concerns related to health, equity, and the economy while mitigating future disasters."
